We need to be diligent in our screening of incoming messages.  Have your guard up at all times and apply the ‘smell test’ to every incoming message.  If it doesn’t smell right?  Don’t open it.  Don’t click on it.  Don’t be duped into something that sounds too good to be true, because it usually is too good to be true.

FAKE ADS : Beware of fake ads!  There are a multitude of ads that will try to trick you into doing something totally unrelated to what you originally intended to do.

An example of a Fake Ad:

While you may be protected by a firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spam; it doesn’t mean there isn’t risk out there.  85% of all intrusion and hacking is conducted through Human Intervention.  Simply put, the user opening an attachment that is malicious or a user clicking on a link and following it to danger.

Malware, short for malicious software, scripts code designed to disrupt computer operation, gather information, or gain unauthorized access to computer systems.  Malware usually comes in the form of an attachment that is cleverly disguised to look like an invoice, a purchase order, or something you would normally open to see what it is.  When in doubt as to the sender or to a possible disguised sender sending you something they wouldn’t normally send you, stop and don’t open it.  Apply the ‘Smell Test.’

Common Opportunities for Malware to Creep Into Your Work Environments:

  • Fake ads
  • Browsing too deep in search engine results
  • Impersonating websites
  • Social medial scams
  • “scareware”
  • Email attachments/scams/spam
  • YouTube scams
