Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that in recent years ransomware has become one of the biggest threats to computer systems and networks, from individuals to businesses.
There are two things you can do to protect yourself or your company from ransomware attacks. But whether we’re talking about more traditional ransomware Trojans or the more sophisticated variants, the old saying holds true: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Especially since, in the case of ransomware, the “cure” may consist of paying significant amounts of cash (usually in Bitcoin) to the “hostage takers.”
FIRST CRUCIAL Element: Be sure you are applying proper Patch Management.
Studies indicate that the majority of the machines that were affected by recent ransomware attacks were running currently supported operating systems, primarily Windows 7, for which patches had previously been made available. Later reports indicate XP computers were less vulnerable than those with newer operating systems, since the malware more often failed to install and caused the system to crash.
Bottom line? The biggest lesson to come out of these recent attacks was that applying security updates as soon as possible can go a long way toward avoiding victimization when a vulnerability like this is exploited by ransomware.
SECOND CRUCIAL Element: Educate Yourself, and Perhaps those in your Company/Business, to Practice Safe Computing.
It is reported that roughly 95% of all security breaches are caused by ‘Human Intervention.’ In other words, the user had to have clicked on something or opened something that released the malware, ransomware, or virus into the PC or onto the network. This all starts with ‘Phishing’. Phishing is the attackers way in to gathering information or take control. The best rules to follow are simple ones.
